Split your budget

A reasonable allocation for a lab-grown ring: 55–65% stone, 25–35% metal and setting, 10% contingency for resizing. Committing to a stone first and treating the setting as an afterthought usually costs more in the end.

Choose the shape before the carat

Oval, emerald and pear give noticeably more face-up size per carat than round. If visible size matters more than maximum brilliance, a 1.5ct oval can look larger than a 1.5ct round.

Grades worth paying for

• Cut: excellent — always worth it
• Colour: G or better in white gold / platinum; H–I is fine in yellow or rose gold
• Clarity: VS1–VS2 — eye-clean and the best value
