Moissanite Colour & Clarity: What D-Color VVS1 Really Means

Moissanite is not graded on the same scale as diamond, which is why you see it sold as 'D-color, VVS1' — a diamond-style shorthand for how colourless and how clean the stone looks.

Why colour matters less in moissanite

Moissanite is grown, not mined, so almost all of it comes out colourless. There is no meaningful 'colour range' the way there is with diamond — nearly every stone on the market sits at D to F. What you are really paying for is the cut.

Clarity: what VVS1 actually means

VVS1 means 'very very slightly included' — flaws so small they need magnification to see. In practice, lab-grown moissanite is routinely eye-clean, so VVS1 is a quality marker rather than something you will ever spot with your eye.

The grade that does matter

If you want to compare two moissanite stones, compare the cut. A well-cut stone returns light to your eye; a poor cut leaks it, and no colour or clarity grade rescues a badly cut stone.

What to check on the certificate
