What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds? (And Are They Real?)
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, not simulants. That distinction matters, because it separates them from cubic zirconia and moissanite.
How they are made
Two methods dominate. CVD grows diamond crystal from a carbon-rich plasma; HPHT replicates the heat and pressure of the earth's mantle. Both produce genuine diamond with the same crystal lattice as a mined stone.
Why they cost less
Supply is not limited by geology. Growing a diamond takes weeks, not billions of years, so the rarity premium that drives mined prices largely disappears.
Grading and certification
Lab-grown diamonds are graded on exactly the same 4Cs scale as mined diamonds, and certified by the same laboratories. Our stones ship with IGI reports.
The honest trade-off
You get more diamond per dollar and a cleaner origin story. What you give up is resale value — mined diamonds hold it better. If you are buying to wear, lab-grown wins on value.
