Why Moissanite Has Become The Practical Choice

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a material that does not occur naturally in gem-quality crystals at any meaningful scale. It is grown in a laboratory under controlled heat and pressure, then cut and polished exactly like a diamond. The result is a stone that measures 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale — harder than sapphire, ruby or emerald, and second among jewellery stones only to diamond itself.

That hardness is the reason moissanite works so well for everyday jewelry. A stone that resists scratching keeps its polish and its sparkle for decades. Softer stones dull at the facet edges and begin to look tired within a few years of daily wear. Moissanite does not.

The other characteristic people notice is fire. Moissanite has a higher refractive index and greater dispersion than diamond, which means it breaks light into rainbow colours more aggressively. In daylight and under spotlights this produces a livelier, more obviously brilliant stone. Some people love it immediately; a few prefer the cooler, whiter look of diamond. Both responses are reasonable, and it is worth seeing a stone in person before deciding.

What D-Color, VVS1 Actually Means

Colour and clarity grading for moissanite follows the same scales used for diamonds. D-Color is the top colour grade — colourless, with no visible yellow or grey tint. VVS1 means inclusions are so minor they are difficult to find even under 10x magnification.

Much of the moissanite sold online is G–J colour, which is cheaper to produce. In stones under 1ct the difference is subtle. In a 2ct or 3ct centre stone it is obvious: the lower grades look faintly warm or grey next to a white metal setting, and the stone loses the crisp contrast that makes moissanite look expensive.

Every design on this page can be made in solid 925 sterling silver, 10K, 14K or 18K gold, or platinum. Silver keeps the price accessible and is a genuinely good choice for a first fine ring or a large-stone look on a modest budget, though it is softer and will show fine scratches sooner than gold.

Gold is the usual choice for a ring worn daily for decades. 10K is the hardest and most scratch-resistant, with 41.7% gold content. 14K at 58.3% gold is the standard balance of durability and colour. 18K at 75% gold has the richest, warmest colour and is the softest of the three.

All our gold is nickel-free and hallmarked. White gold is rhodium plated for a bright, hard white finish; rhodium wears over years of daily wear and can be re-plated inexpensively, which we offer as a service.

Caring For Moissanite Jewelry

Moissanite does not fade, cloud or lose fire over time. What dulls its appearance is the film of skin oils, hand cream, hair product and soap residue that accumulates on the underside of any stone worn regularly. This is not damage and it is not permanent.

Clean your piece at home with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft-bristled brush — a clean baby toothbrush works perfectly. Brush the underside of the stone where light enters, rinse under warm running water with the drain plugged, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Once a month is plenty for most people.

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if your piece has pavé or channel-set stones, because vibration can loosen small settings. Avoid chlorine and household bleach, which attack the alloy in gold over time even though they do not affect moissanite itself. Take rings off before swimming, cleaning and heavy manual work.
